Air All Around Us
The pupils in the Senior Room have been busy examining and experimenting with the air around us. Here is a selection of different experiments detailing the tremendous power of air.
In this video, we see how air takes up space. When water takes its space it has to escape somewhere else. The bubbles are proof of this. Click here to see our video.
Here we identify how air takes up space but is also a force. The air in the bottle escapes when boiling water is poured into it as the steam pushes it out. When we pour cold water over it the bottle begins to crunch, this is for two reasons: there is no longer enough air in the bottle so a vacuum is created and thus implodes and secondly, there is now greater air pressure outside the bottle than there is inside. This air pressure pushes the bottle inwards from the outside. Check our video here.
Our final video demonstrates that when air pressure is removed by a force it is likely that objects around it will lift. In this video, we see that the hairdryer removes the air pressure over the sheet of paper and the sheet begins to lift as the air pressure below the sheet is greater than the air pressure above it. This is how our airplanes work today! Click here to see our video.
