The Our World Irish Aid Awards
The Our World Irish Aid Awards gives the children the chance to learn more about the developing world and to speak out for a better future for all the world’s people. The theme of this year’s Awards is ‘Wellbeing for People and Planet’. The children created fabulous posters based on the Global Goals. We even received a lovely email from the Irish Aid Project Manager!
Our First Litter Picking Advevnture
The first child in Attymon NS has taken home the Picker Pal Pack and it looks like she went on a very exciting litter-picking adventure... Well done!!
Picker Pals
Attymon NS are very excited to be taking part in the litter-picking initiative 'Picker Pals'. Each child will get a chance to go on a litter-picking adventure in their local community. The children also receive a Picker Pals Funbook and Adventure Reader, learning about how littering has a negative effect on the natural world.
Less food waste
The children learned all about food waste this week. They learned that a high percentage of the world's food is wasted. They suggested many ways of wasting less food including using leftover vegetables to make soup (which we tried out in school). They made some tasty vegetable soup using leftover carrots, onions and potatoes.
Food waste is an important topic in our current Green Schools Theme 'Global Citizenship- Litter and Waste'.

Climate Action Week
Climate Action Week 2021 took place from the 11th to the 15th of October. The children took part in the Green Schools Event 'We Want Our Park Back'. This book is written and illustrated by Oisin McGann. During the event, the book was read to them and they were shown how to draw a hedgehog. They were then asked to pick one of the animals from his book to draw. They had the choice of a hedgehog, fox, hare, rabbit or bird. Have a look at the pictures below of our exciting Climate Week Event!
National Bike Week
Attymon NS took part in National Bike Week 2021. On Wednesday the children, teachers and parents cycled to school for COW (Cycle on Wednesday). We had great fun cycling to school together.
Many thanks to the parents for their support in this initiative.
Have a look in the gallery below at the pictures from this fun week.
It is great to see our bicycle shed full of bikes and being put to good use.

Theme 2021/2022 - Global Citizenship Litter and Waste
The children are busy working on the new Green- Schools Theme- Global Citizenship Litter and Waste. It is is the sixth theme of the Green-Schools Programme. This theme enables us to discover how our work on the Green-Schools programme will positively influence people and their environments worldwide. It will also allow us to revise the Litter and Waste theme with the whole school. Have a look below to see some pictures of our litter pickers busy at work.
Theme - Biodiversity
A few weeks ago we created birdfeeders by using old recycable materials such as old milk cartons. These birdfeeders will be used fpr bird seed to increase biodiversity in our school and in our locality
Green Schools Outdoor Survey
This week we have been working on surveys. The first survey we did was to identify what the children know abouttbiodiversity. We analysed the results and we realised we need to learn a lot about biodiversity. Following this the senior room created an outdoor survey to see how good our school yard is for biodiversity and the areas we need to improve on. While conducting our survey we discovered that there was a difference in the soil in the garden and the soil around the grass. We found lots of spiders and saw robins flying around the school. Below are some photographs of us conducting the outdoor survey.

Travel workshop with Catríona.
Catríona did a travel workshop with us. She showed us pictures of how other children from other countries travel to school in dangerous conditions, some taking up to 5 hours to reach their destination! Some children even had to cross dodgy rope bridges to get to school while others took a zip line to cross dangerous waters and some even used a tightrope! We're glad our walk to school is not so eventful! Then we wrote about how we get to school.

Blue Day
We had Blue Day in school on January 28th. On Blue Day we dressed up around the theme of water. We did this because we wanted to draw people’s attention to water conservation. We had lots of artistic raindrop costumes, clouds, rainbows and a bolt of lightning in a thunder storm. We even had a fisherman and a weather forecaster. We all know it is very important to conserve water.

Yesterday, the 11th of March 2015, 4 members of the green school committee went to the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill, with Mrs Hardiman, to attend a meeting with members of An Taisce, Green Schools co-ordinators and other schools to share ideas and discuss our progress so far in our Green School's water theme. We did a treasure hunt, a plan of our ideal water saving school and we presented our ideas and action plans for the future to other schools. The meeting was of great benefit to us and gave us many great ideas for future actions.
